Summer's crowds are gone, fall foliage is just starting, and the weather finally breaks. September might be the single best month to plan a trip.
Everyone comes to Osage County in spring for the wildflowers, and in July for Cavalcade. September gets overlooked. That's a mistake. September is, hands down, one of the most underrated travel months in Oklahoma — and especially in Osage County.
The Weather
September is when Oklahoma summer finally lets go. Daytime temperatures drop from the 90s into the 70s and low 80s. Mornings and evenings cool down to the 50s and 60s. The humidity breaks. It's the kind of weather that makes you want to sit on a porch for hours.
The Crowds
Summer travel season is over. Families are back at school. Tourism traffic in Pawhuska thins out dramatically. You can walk into The Mercantile for lunch without a wait. You can hike a trail and see no one. You can drive the Tallgrass Prairie and feel like you have the whole place to yourself.
The Light
September light in Oklahoma is legendary among photographers. The sun sits lower, the colors warm up, and golden hour stretches across most of the evening. If you're going to take one trip a year specifically to take pictures, September is the time.
The Prairie
The tallgrass is at its tallest — some species reach seven or eight feet by early September. Wildflowers transition from the summer palette to late-season asters and goldenrod. The bison are preparing for rut; bulls are active and visible.
The Events

Patio weather returns in September. Restaurants across the county reopen outdoor seating. The farmer's markets are at their peak — tomatoes, corn, okra, peppers, peaches. If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen, this is the month to cook.

If you can only come one weekend in September, aim for the fair weekend. Pair it with:
