Cavalcade week is almost here. If you're planning to be in Pawhuska for the International Roundup Cavalcade — "the world's largest amateur rodeo" — now is the time to lock in your plans. Here's what to expect this year and how to make the most of your visit.
What Is Cavalcade?
Since 1945, the Cavalcade has brought amateur cowboys and cowgirls to Pawhuska every third week of July. Unlike the pro circuit, these are working cowboys, ranchers, and weekend rodeo athletes competing for the love of the sport. It gives the event a different flavor — more community, more grit, more authentic.

This Year's Schedule
Performances run multiple nights at the Ben Johnson Memorial Rodeo Arena just south of downtown Pawhuska. Events include:
- Bareback bronc riding - Saddle bronc riding - Bull riding - Barrel racing - Team roping - Calf roping - Steer wrestling

Lodging Update
If you haven't booked yet, book tonight. Pawhuska lodging sells out for Cavalcade week every year. The Frontier Hotel is usually gone first. Vacation rentals in town fill up next. Nearby Bartlesville and Skiatook are your best fallback.
If everything's booked, consider camping at Osage Hills State Park. It's 20 minutes away and has both RV sites and tent camping.

What to Wear
Dress the part. You don't need full western regalia, but jeans, boots, and a hat fit right in and keep you comfortable in the heat. The evenings cool off a little, but it's still July in Oklahoma — expect heat and humidity.
What Else to Do
Don't just come for the rodeo. A Cavalcade trip is the perfect excuse to spend 3-4 days exploring Osage County:

Tickets
Tickets are available at the gate and often online. Prices are more reasonable than pro rodeos. Grand entry each night is a must — arrive early.
After the Rodeo
Each night's performance wraps late. Many attendees head to downtown Pawhuska for post-rodeo drinks and food. The Frontier Hotel bar is the classic spot.
