Spring gets most of the attention, but many locals will tell you fall is actually the best season to visit Osage County. The crowds thin out, the weather is perfect, the prairie turns gold, and some of the year's best events happen in September and October. Here's why you should plan a fall trip.
The Weather
Fall in Oklahoma is legendary. Daytime temperatures settle into the 60s and 70s, nights get crisp, and the oppressive summer humidity finally breaks. It's hiking weather, picnic weather, sit-on-the-porch weather.
The Colors
Osage County isn't New England — there are no screaming-red maple forests. But the fall color here has its own quiet beauty. The tallgrass turns amber and gold, oaks in the hills shift to burgundy and rust, and the cottonwoods along the creeks go bright yellow. Mid-to-late October is usually peak.
Drive the back roads west of Pawhuska for the best color. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is especially beautiful in fall — the grass is tallest, the light is warmest, and the bison are preparing for winter.
The Events
Osage County Fair — Third week of September, in Pawhuska. A classic county fair with livestock shows, rodeo events, live music, and fair food. Free to attend; paid for the rodeo.
National Indian Taco Championship — First Saturday in October, in Pawhuska. This is the big one. Competitors from across the country come to make the best Indian taco — fry bread piled with beans, meat, cheese, and toppings. You taste samples from dozens of cooks. It's unforgettable.
Pumpkin festivals — Several small towns in Osage County host pumpkin events in October. Check our events calendar closer to the date.
What to Do
Hike Osage Hills State Park — The fall foliage here is the best in the county. Eight miles of trails through sandstone bluffs and oak forests.
Visit the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve — The most photogenic season. Bring a camera.
Tour Woolaroc — The drive through the wildlife preserve is especially scenic in fall, with longhorns and bison against a backdrop of autumn color.
Explore the small towns — Fairfax, Barnsdall, Hominy, and Shidler are quiet in fall but full of character. Grab coffee, walk around, talk to locals.
