The last days of summer are the sweetest. Here are the best one-day family trips in Osage County before school starts back up.
The countdown to the first day of school is on, and every family knows the feeling: one more adventure before the homework starts. Osage County is packed with day-trip-friendly destinations that work for families with kids of all ages. Here are our favorites.
For the Little Ones (Ages 3-7)
Osage Hills State Park Creek — Shallow, safe, and shaded. Bring a bucket and let them splash. The short Creek Trail is perfect for little legs.
Woolaroc Mountain Man Camp — A living history camp inside the Woolaroc preserve. Hands-on exhibits, costumed interpreters, and wide-open space to run.
Osage County Fairgrounds — If timing works out with fair season, this is kid heaven. Rodeos, carnival rides, livestock shows, and fair food.
For Elementary Kids (Ages 7-12)
[The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve](/blog/tallgrass-prairie-visitor-guide) — Bison, wildflowers, big skies. Bring binoculars and a field guide and make it a nature lesson. The Scenic Overlook Trail is easy enough for this age.

Hominy's Murals — A walking scavenger hunt of outdoor art. Download the map, let them find each mural, and talk about the history as you go.
For Tweens and Teens (Ages 12+)
Bartlesville Day Trip — Woolaroc Museum, the Price Tower, and maybe lunch at a pizza place. Gives teens some variety without being boring.
Kayaking on Skiatook Lake — Rent kayaks, pack a lunch, make it a half-day. Teenagers who say they're "over" family time usually come around.
Osage Hills Lookout Trail — A moderate 1.5-mile hike with a real payoff at the end. Bring snacks for the top.
The Full Family Day Itinerary
Try this:
8:00 AM — Leave home with a full cooler. 10:00 AM — Arrive at the Tallgrass Prairie. Drive the bison loop. Short hike. 12:30 PM — Picnic lunch at a scenic overlook. 2:00 PM — Back to Pawhuska. Bakery treat at The Mercantile. 3:00 PM — Osage Nation Museum (45 minutes). 4:30 PM — Drive home or stop for dinner.
Total: one memorable, relatively cheap, very Oklahoma day.
